ESC! Magazine
Contributor Guidelines
UPDATED March 26, 2012
ESC! Magazine is currently on hiatus with no date scheduled for Vol 14, No 1. Though submissions may be sent in, they will not be considered until the next publication date has been set.
My sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
This is a summary of the guidelines for submitting your
work to ESC! Magazine. For a more detailed look at the
guidelines or the Author Artist release form, please download
them using the links at the left.
Please be sure to follow all guidelines, especially when it comes to including all of your contact information with the submission.
NOTE: I regret that due to ever increasing postage costs for mailing contributor copies, I am currently unable to accept any new submissions from outside the US. I apologize for this inconvenience and hope to, someday soon, be able to work with the fine writers from around the world whom I've grown to know and love. I am open to any and all questions, comments and suggestions for solving our postage dilemma.
Important Notice:
> All short fiction submissions received will be considered for Volume 14 onward.
> Poetry and Artwork/Comic submissions are currently being accepted for Vol. 14, No. 1 onward.
Upcoming Issues:
Vol 14, No 1 -- Release date TBD
Vol 14, No 2 -- Release date TBD
What Can I Submit?
I am looking for quality fiction, poetry and artwork - from
new and experienced authors - that has not been published
before or you still own the rights to. Your work should
conform to the following guidelines:
FICTION: Should run between 2500 and 5000 words. Longer
works will be considered and may, with the author's
permission, be split between two or more issues. Shorter works
(300-1000 words) will also be considered. All genres are
acceptable, however, ESC! Magazine reserves the right to reject any
submission based on content or appropriateness to the
magazine.
POETRY: Any length poetry will be considered. Please do not submit more than five poems in
one envelope or e-mail message.
ARTWORK: I am looking for artists to illustrate the fiction
and poetry appearing in the magazine. Writers may
illustrate their own pieces. I am also looking for stand-alone
artwork and comics which tell a story (like serials that can
run from issue to issue) or can be used for cover
art.
Artwork should be 8½"x11" or smaller. If the
original piece is larger, you should reduce it on a high
quality photocopier to fit these dimensions.
Artwork should be black and white line-art (illustration
art). At this
time ESC! Magazine does not accept color artwork. This will be
added in the future as demand dictates.
How Do I Submit My Work?
Electronic submissions are preferred.
Use the following addresses to submit your work via e-mail:
Short Fiction, Reviews, Artwork - submissions AT escwebs.com
Poetry - escpoetryeditor AT gmail.com
Please use an appropriate subject line! Due to the increase of unsolicited commercial
e-mail (Spam), messages with blank or unclear subject lines may be inadvertantly deleted. In addition, submissions sent to ANY OTHER e-mail address
than those listed above will NOT be replied to.
Your
document should be single spaced. Please use the checklist
provided to help you.
All submissions will be scanned for viruses and immediately
rejected and remain unread if a virus is detected. If you are running Microsoft Windows, we strongly
recommend running an anti-virus application such as Nod/32, AVG, Norton
Anti-Virus among others.
We can accept fiction/poetry submissions in the following
formats: RTF (Rich Text), ASCII/TXT (Plain Text),
OpenOffice.org, Microsoft
Word.
RTF, ODT and DOC are preferred.
Submit your illustrations in the following formats: AI
(Illustrator), TIFF, PSD (Photoshop) or PNG.
Please be sure to include a short cover letter in the body of your e-mail submission that includes your name, full mailing address, email address, optionally a phone number and title of your work. This can be in the cover letter OR in the submission attachment.
I can not accept your work without your complete contact information!
If you would rather mail your electronic submission, it
should be in a PC/Mac compatible format on either 3½"
floppy or CD/DVD (-R, +R, -RW or +RW). The disk should be clearly labeled
with its contents, format and the submitter’s name.
Non-electronic submissions should be a typed, single or
double-spaced document with your name and address clearly
placed on the first page. Your name and the title of the work
should appear on all pages thereafter. Handwritten submissions
will be rejected. Use our checklist found in the PDF guidelines to help you organize your
submission.
Artwork should be submitted as a high quality photocopy.
Please do not send your originals! I cannot be responsible for
what may happen to them. Again, please put your name and
address on all pages of your submission.
If you would like your submission returned, please enclose
a self addressed, stamped, envelope (SASE) with enough postage
to get it back to you.
Please mail submissions to:

If Accepted, Who Then Owns The Work?
Simply stated: You Do.
Please see our sample Contributor Release
and Agreement form for more details. Please write if you have any questions you'd like answered before submitting.
How Much Do I Get Paid?
ESC! Magazine's authors and artists are paid in copy, both
printed and electronic. The contributor also is assigned
certain distribution rights for the issue in which his/her
piece appears. For details on the terms of payment and
distribution rights, please see the sample Contributor Release
and Agreement form available for download from this site.
Each author or artist is given the chance to reject what he
or she feels are unfair terms by simply not signing the
release form and then notifying me by e-mail or US Mail.
